Reading Activity: Red Surfer Riding, Sue Gibbison

Red Surfer Riding, Sue Gibbison
Answer the following questions in red:

Why are the surfers getting ready to go at 7.30? The are getting ready for the high-tide and have been in the water since daybreak.

What is something significant that is happening at that time and ideal for surfers? The competition will be beginning soon and they were making the most of the waves that were coming.

What is a ‘grommets’ heat? A young surfer under the age of 16 competing in a heat.

What is Jessie the champion of? Jessie is the reigning women’s open champion.

What is a ‘convoy’? A group that travels together as one.

Do you think it would take much organisation to organise a surfing competition? Yes Why/why not? I think this because of you’ll have to get all the equipment and get all the surfers together for it to be able to be a competition.

What are some of the things people would need to consider before selecting a beach for a surf competition? That it has no-one else in the water except for competitors, its going to have some waves, it has enough space for people to gather and compete.

Why are there various heats in a surfing competition? They have this so they can figure out who is the best and who is going to move on to the next round.

How does Daniel do in the first round of the competition? He does very well. Use evidence from the text to support your answer. “A perfect roundhouse slice there,” says the commentator, “with nice tight turns.”

Explain how a surf competition works? In each heat, four competitors have twenty minutes to score as many points as they can. Each wave that they surf is rated by the judges out of ten- each surfers two best rides count as their final score. The two competitors that scored the highest proceed to the next round. All surfers a ranked. The person who was top ranked gets to wear a red shirt, as the others have to wear yellow, white, or blue. This helps the judges and the spectators to follow who’s who from the beach.

How was Jessie feeling about getting into the finals? She made it into the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and she felt really good and proud of her self. She was gutted that she got knocked out of the competition. But overall she was hoping to get some very good waves.

Make a list of all of the feelings that Jessie and her brother would have been feeling.
Justify and give examples from the text to support that they would be feeling this way.
Nervous: “You’ll be surfing later this afternoon,” they tell Jessica Santorik
Gutted: She’s been knocked out of the competition. “I’m gutted,” she says, the shrugs.
Supportive: “Go, jess!” yells Leon.
Proud: He paddles hard and catches a long-left hander, twisting, turning and cutting back to ride the whole length of the wave.

Wednesday:

What do you think it would take to become a world class pro surfer? You would need to know how to surf waves and also practise a lot. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy food. Why do you think this? So you can get fit and still be in good shape.

How many hours per day do you think a surfer would need to train? I think that you’ll need to train 8-9 hours a day.

To be a surfer would do you think a person would need to be good at? They’ll need to be good at balancing and know some really good tricks.

We could agree that surfing is a type of sport, is this included in the Commonwealth games? No, but they do have some sports that are water related.

Do they have other sports similar to surfing in the Commonwealth games, if so what types of sports are included that are similar? They have sports that are water related but I don’t think that there is a sport in the Commonwealth Games that is very similar to surfing.

What are the dangers of being a surfer?
1. There could be really unfriendly sea-creatures in the water

2. There is a very big risk of drowning some people who don’t know how to swim this could affect them

3. Waves are sometimes really dangerous and are mostly very powerful when you get hit by them

Sometimes when you’re an athlete and things don’t go as planned it’s easy to give up and become negative. How do you think athletes stay positive to keep doing what a they love and not give up after a bad day? I think that they get encouraged by other people such as family, locals and their coaches. They might also just snap out of it and realize that this is what they’ve been dreaming off and they want to accomplish it. They really want to achieve their goal.

Do you think surfers would need to eat a specific diet? Yes Why/why not? They might end up eating too much of something and maybe even too little of something. They need the right amount of food everyday for them to be in good shape and to be fit.

Create a week timetable/plan for the life of a surfer.
Your plan needs to include the following.
The times that they practise surfing.
Their meal plans and dietary requirements.
You need to justify and think about the tides and why it would be suitable to be surfing at that time e.g. the tide is in so the waves are larger and suitable for surfing at 11.am.

My Relaxing Holiday

Staying over at my auntie’s house during the holidays was honestly enjoyable. It all started with a movie night at her house along with my 5 cousins, my two uncles, my auntie, my siblings and me. I heard my ringtone and raced into my room with the song “Maria, Maria”. I hurried over to answer it, and it was my auntie. She kindly asked if we would be interested in coming over to her house. My response was obviously “YES!” “We will also be having nothing but junk food”, she replied. Our conversation finished and I scurried down the hallway to tell my Dad about the news. It was a yes from my Dad and also a definite yes from my Mum. My opinion is that my Mum just wanted us to go away for a little while, and this was her opportunity.

I ran into my room, snatched my bag from the corner and zipped it open. My siblings had already got the news and was packing their bags as well. Rapidly opening my drawer I pulled anything that I could find out and stuffed it in my bag. Excitement rushed through my veins. Finally we were all ready, but first of all we had to wait for my auntie and uncle to get here. 5-10 minutes passed by until they finally arrived. Pushing a shoving, I ultimately made my way out the front door. I cautiously walked down the steps and sprinted to the car, trying to beat my siblings. We all jumped into the car and sped off.

At first we went to pizza hut and ordered 8 pizzas and while they were getting made we decided to go to Pak N Save. All we mainly bought was junk food and more junk food. Chocolate, chips, drinks, pop corn, chocolate biscuits and other sweet food was on the list. We paid for our things and made our way back to the car. Back to Pizza Hut we went, and then finally drove all the way to my auntie’s house. When we arrived I felt relieved,  and quickly sauntered towards the front door. As I entered a warm wave struck me. It was time for us to eat.

Drinks, chips and pizza were on the table waiting to be eaten. We all sat around the table and had a feed. When we were finished eating we tidied up, relaxed and watched T.v for a short amount of time. Unfortunately we did not watch a movie. But instead we played on the Xbox, we went onto the laptop, watched T.v, helped cook some yummy dinner and played all sorts of fun games. The first night passed and I was exhausted.

As for the second day it wasn’t that good. The weather played up and it was raining. If it wasn’t raining we would’ve been out for the whole day. But during that time we just stayed home. As we got on with our day, it was basically the same as yesterday. There was still some pizza left from last night. But I wanted something else. Instead I decided to have Coco Pops along with sliced bananas and pears. I was quite enjoyable and most of all delightful. It came to around 8:00 pm and it was time for us to head home. I packed up my bags and headed for the front door. I jumped in the car buckled up my seat belt and we all began our journey home. I sat curled up at the back seat waiting quietly for us to make our arrival. Finally I felt the car come to a steady paste, so I peeked out the window and we were parked right outside my house. With exhaustion I stood up carefully and took one step out of the car, followed with another and another. Until I was inside, but on the other hand I was also very tired. I didn’t have enough time to tell my parents about how fun it was, because I was totally drowsy. It was just great spending sometime with my family.

Summarising The Case Of The Collapsed Cards

WALT:    I can condense the ideas and paraphrase  in my own words.

Title: The Case Of The Collapsed Cards
Who was in the story? Buzz, Buzz’s Mum, Crash, Aunt Mabel, Melody, Buzz’s Dad

What was the problem in the story? Buzz has returned and found that someone in his family had sabotaged his house of cards, that he was still building. He thinks that its someone in his family had done this on purpose, or has been playing tricks on him.

How was it solved? Buzz questioned everyone in the house. His brother Crash, was practising playing his guitar the whole time her was out at soccer practise. Buzz’s Mum only went inside his room to put Buzz’s clean laundry nicely on his bed. But his mum said that his house of cards were neatly stacked. Suspicion filled him, asking questions were very difficult. Melody, Buzz’s sister said that she had went into his room as well. But she only went in there to get the “Sonic Boomers” Cd, and walked straight out of there. Buzz’s Dad bursted in the kitchen and said that he had also went inside his room, he also tripped over the steps while walking up them. When he opened the door to say “Hello” to Buzz he noticed that Buzz’s cards we knocked over, and scattered all across the table. At this moment he started to really think about who was the culprit that had sabotaged his house of cards. He was also trying to beat his brothers record, with 37 cards. but Buzz only had 36 cards that held up his house. He only needed two more cards to be able to beat Crash’s record.

Now write all the information above into a summary of what the story was about.

Buzz was out at soccer practice, when he returned he found his cards to be scattered all across the table in his room. It was the third time in a row that this event has happened. At first he thought it was the wind so he shut all the windows in his room. The next time it happened he thought that someone in his family had been playing a trick on him so he set up a microphone and a 120-minute tape-recorder. Which was just the right amount of time for him to go to soccer practice and also return. When he came back he rewound the tape and listened very closely. Buzz questioned everyone in the house. His brother Crash, was practicing playing his guitar the whole time her was out at soccer practice. Buzz’s Mum only went inside his room to put Buzz’s clean laundry nicely on his bed. But his mum said that his house of cards were neatly stacked. Suspicion filled him, asking questions were very difficult. Melody, Buzz’s sister said that she had went into his room as well. He was also trying to beat his brothers record, with 37 cards. but Buzz only had 36 cards that held up his house. He only needed two more cards to be able to beat Crash’s record. He tried very hard to catch the person who had done this to him.
